Sue was born in the U.K. She moved to Canada, and completed high school and university in Ontario, where she earned a B.Math degree in computer science. Sue moved to Nova Scotia to teach Business Computer Programming at Kingstec. After taking a break from employment to raise three daughters, she returned to teaching as a math teacher. Sue enjoyed helping others, so she decided to complete a Masters Degree in Counselling from Acadia University, and moved into a school counsellor role. She is still active in her role as a school counsellor and enjoys working with and assisting youth.
During her time as a school counsellor, Sue has continued to study and develop skills to help both youth and adults. She is trained in and has experience in helping youth and adults with:
- Anxiety and stress management
- Grief and loss
- Self harm
- Career counselling
- Life transitions
- Pain management
- Obsessive disorders
Sue draws from many counselling techniques and theories to assist clients in resolving difficulties. Techniques might include solution-focused counselling, cognitive behavioral therapy, relaxation techniques, art therapy, play therapy, motivational interviewing, mindfulness, or role playing. The techniques chosen will depend on the individual client’s needs and preferences, and plans for therapy are made in consultation with the client.
Sue is also trained as a hypnotherapist, and uses hypnosis in combination with the above techniques at the request of her client. Hypnosis allows a client to relax and focus on a specific problem, while visualizing a preferred way of living. Hypnosis is particularly helpful for relaxation, anxiety, stress management, pain management, addictions and trauma. Clients wishing to use hypnosis for pain management are asked to first consult with a medical practitioner to determine any physical cause of the pain.
Sue is registered as a counselling therapist with the Nova Scotia College of Counselling Therapists. Fees may be covered by health insurance plans. Check with your insurance provider to see if counselling therapists are covered by your plan. Often, if counselling is covered, you can request to see a counselling therapist, but may need advance approval.
